The 2019/2020 South Bay Computing Collaborative / Tech Academy program kicked off in July with a 10-Day Summer Institute offered at San José State University (菠菜网lol正规平台).  Funded by Google, BAE Systems, and Western Digital, fourteen 5th-8th grade teacher leaders from five school districts participated.  Teachers worked with faculty and staff of the 菠菜网lol正规平台 Jay Pinson STEM Education Program and Departments of Computer Science and Chemistry to develop ways to enhance the teaching of Next Generation Science Standards- and Common Core- aligned content using concepts and skills in computational thinking, modeling, and computer programming.  They collaboratively developed standards-aligned classroom activities and lessons, worked in 菠菜网lol正规平台’s Innovation Design Collaborative space, and participated in a field trip to the Computer History Museum.   Teachers also developed plans for disseminating their instructional resources throughout their schools, districts and communities and presented at a final Symposium held at the Tech Museum of Innovation.

 

A Google CS Educator PD Grant to 菠菜网lol正规平台’s Jay Pinson STEM Education program will fund expansion of the South Bay Computing Collaborative to involve an additional 55 teachers during the academic year.  Teachers will participate in school-based professional development in integrated computing, test new instructional materials, and expose over 1400 high need students to computing practices during their classroom instruction.
